44th Annual NCGA Four Ball Championship Results From Spyglass Hill

Under perfect conditions on the beautiful Spyglass Hill golf course two teams shot impressive 64 to lead after the 1st round of the NCGA Four Ball Championship.

I have been playing in this event for almost 30 years now, and cannot remember when the weather and course have been so perfect at the same time. 20 years ago a 1st round 69 would have been a very satisfying, but in this day and age it’s a score that puts you well back of the leaders.  Tomorrow at 8:30 we will again try to go low (67 or better) to get back into the hunt.

I’ll have pictures of the course tomorrow and the scores below are off by one stroke to par (-9 is really -8)

Final Results 2010 George L. Coleman Invitational at Seminole Golf Club

The final round of the Coleman was greeted with winds that gusted to over 30mph making scoring conditions very tough. I’ll waste little time on my sad story and quest to finish in the top 10 was severely hammered by the #1 hole. Now keep in mind this is a straight down wind hole that is about 365 yards long with little trouble off the tee. So after a perfect drive 10 paces from the front of the green I managed to hit my chip shot slightly right of the pin, which was my first mistake as I watched my ball roll off the right side of the green into a green side bunker. I then blasted out to about 5 feet for my par putt which I stroked 4 feet past and missed for a quick and very ugly double bogey 6. This is the reason why the best Mid Amateurs and Senior Amateurs shot over par for 54 holes for the winning score.

Congratulations go out to Kris Mikkelsen who defeated Dennis Kavelman and R.J. Nakashian in a three hole playoff. On the senior side Pat Tallent had the low round of the day with a 74 to outlast Buddy Marucci by two shots.

This is an amazing amateur with rich history, and incredible late hole drama to the finish. We the participants are quite fortunate to be invited to one of the best tests in amateur golf. I again hope to be invited back next year so I can try to limit the number of mistakes that I annually make on this tough test of golf. I will be thinking about the many shots that got away….but seems I always return the next year to make similar mistakes…I guess it’s why I love the game so much!!

19th George L. Coleman Invitational 2010 – 36 hole results

the second shot into #1

There are few golfing experiences quite like playing at Seminole in Juno Beach Fl. where for 19 years fortunate amateurs have had the pleasure to play this awesome course in quite unique conditions. When you gather 80 of the best amateurs in the country and play a 6,787 yard course in light winds you would expect some low scores…..not at Seminole. Again like Pine Valley, words do little justice to just how accurate you need to be while playing Seminole.

There will be times when you think you’ve hit the perfect shot (even a sand wedge from 60 yards) only to watch your shot roll off the side of a green into a very deep green side bunker. The slope at Seminole is 139 with a73.6 rating, but again this is a very tough test of golf, both mentally and physically.

My round on day one was highlighted with a near hole in one on the 5th hole where my 6 iron shot hit the pin dead square (as reported by Bryon Norton who watched it from the 6th tee box) the ball ended hanging over the lip for a nice 2. I wasted many shots over this round where I had trouble on several occasions off the tee, especially on the par 5 ninth hole where I hit my tee shot in the hazard right followed by another shot after a drop into the hazard again for a smooth 7. Today in round two my back was locked up and I knew I would be in for a tough round, despite the lone highlight on 18 with a birdie 3.

Tim Jackson (US Senior Open leader after 36 holes and low amateur) is leading after 36 holes with a 2 under total of 142, and Buddy Marucci leads the senior division with a great 1st round of 67 followed up with a 74 for a 141 total. The third and final round should be very competitive and a lot of fun on these super smooth and brilliantly quick putting complexes!

I’ll have pictures of all 18 holes in a following post along with the rest of Pine Valley.

Thanks for staying tuned!
