US MID AMATEUR DOWN TO FINAL TWO – Nathan Smith just lost on the 19th hole

Kenny Cook of Noblesville, Ind was stellar in his semi final match against John Engler from Augusta GA winning easily at 6and 5. Kenny was 4 under par on the card and will face the winner of the Nathan Smith (Pitt, PA) or Randal Lewis (Alma MI) who are dead even after 18 holes with Smith coming from 2 down to even the match on the 18th hole with an eagle three (it looks to be a conceited eagle as Randal posted a 5 on this par 5 hole).

The weather has cooperated all during the match play portion of the tournament, and should be nice tomorrow as well for the scheduled 36 hole final match. My hope is I’ll a winner of the Smith/Lewis match before I log off and fire this off. But what is truly remarkable is that Nathan Smith has won 16 consecutive matches over the past two plus years in the US Mid Amateur.

If you may recall earlier I mentioned that there could be a surprise winner in this years event…well Nathan Smith would not be a surprise winner, Kenny Cook would be!!

Well hot off the live scoring Randal Lewis has just defeated the King, Nathan Smith with a birdie on the first hole of sudden death (on the 1st hole). So we will have a surprise winner, but both of these guys can play, and I’m sure they are a bit surprised themselves!

Good luck to both these guys as they are playing for a possible spot in the 2012 Masters…talk about pressure!!

Stay tuned for final results and comments on the 2011 US Mid AMateur
