The next ten days will perhaps provide the biggest challenge of the summer with the next three venues of Metedeconk (Mon, Tue), Pine Valley for the Crump Cup (Wed-Sun) and the USGA State Team Championship at Mayacama (Mon-Thurs the following week).
Over the pas few weeks I’ve been trying to figure out what happened to my game at the US Amateur and the Mid Amateur qualifier…? So I went back to work (it never ends) and I discovered something that I’ve NEVER tried before.
Golf is all about imagination, distant control, confidence and touch and feel. I lost my touch and feel at Chambers Bay, and my confidence at the Home course. I decided to look deeper into my game and try to come up with something new, and boy did I ever. I’ve spent the last 40 years basically holding the club at the end of the grip changing my swing speed to alter distances.
For the past week I’ve been trying to correct an errant driver that’s gone sour..been trying everything. Finally I tried to choke WAY down on the driver and SHAZAMM straight drive after straight drive resulted with amazing solid contact (AK is on to something here), then I tried the same thing with my 6 iron, wedge, etc..all with the same results better contact and a lot more consistent.
So I decided today to go out on the OC and put it to the on course test, and I again couldn’t believe the results. I took 3 Penta balls numbered 2 and three balls numbered 5 and would hit one set choking at least 2 inches down on the grip and the other set at the end of the grip. The second hole tee shot has been my nemesis for a long time. Choking down I hit the fairway all three times, and up at the top of the grip I hit it once. The iron shots were even more eye-popping with accuracy and distance far superior every time I tested my new theory. Not only was the contact better but I was able to maintain a better spine angle throughout the shot.
I am quite excited about my new revelation and will be implementing it tomorrow in my late afternoon practice round at Metedeconk the site of the Metedeconk National Invitation on Tuesday (one day 27 holes) followed by a Pine Valley practice round on Wednesday for the Crump Cup which starts on Thursday thru Sunday. Hope on a plane Sunday evening and get back for a Monday practice round at Mayacama for a Tuesday start of the USGA State team championship. I hope to cover all these events with photos and interviews so please stay tuned.
