California State Amateur – 1st rd

My 1st round started at La Jolla CC in beautiful La Jolla up on the hilltop where you can see the Pacific Ocean from just about every tee. This is a gem of a course and has tremendous history linked to this relatively short but tough golf course. La Jolla CC has hosted many big events including many sectional US Open qualifiers in the 70’s and 80’s which is when I first played this awesome track in 1980 while attending SDSU. All I can remember in my 1st of 11 sectional open qualifiers is I was petrafied!!

Today I was relaxed and thouroughly enjoyed the great weather and perfect greens. The scores are bunched between 69-74 and it looks a playoff will occur for the 32 spot between 3 or maybe 4 over ( I doubt it though) after playing in over 25 State Am’s all I can tell you is that the scores get better every year as there are more and more good fearless young players!!

I had photos of every hole at both La Jolla CC and Rancho Santa Fe CC for you until I lost all Internet access here at the Double Tree. This is my 1st official Blog post off my iPhone.

My round at LJCC today was a lot of fun as I didn’t hit it that well but putted (sidesaddle) very well only missing a 5 footer for birdie on 18, but managed to eagle 15 with a 15 foot putt.

I hope to have better coverage and photos tomorrow for you so stay tuned.

For a great article and complete results go to and get all the scores from the best amateurs in California. If your not a member of yet I suggest you join it’s well worth it!!

Stay tuned final medal play results and photos tomorrow from Rancho Santa Fe
