The 84th Annual Ernie Pieper Santa Clara County Championship – Final Results

I am thrilled to be the 84th Champion of the EPSCCC, it was a day I’ll never forget. To be included on the trophy with names like 15 time champion Ernie Pieper a legend in amateur golf, PGA tour players Dick & John Lotz, Ron Cerrudo, Forest Fezler and Matt Bettencourt. Two of the best amateurs in the history of Nor Cal and past State amateur champions Gary Vanier and Casey Boyns. Past NCGA president Gary Vandeweghe, and 1981 US Amateur Champion Nathaniel Crosby, along with 4 time consecutive champion Greg Galasso (who was in the gallery on Sun).  Future PGA star Joseph Bramlett is a three time champion also.   My apologies to anyone I left out as all of the past champions are players worth mentioning.

The pressure was intense on the back nine as I was either tied or 1 up with playing partner Anthony Machi.  What it always seems to come down to is who makes the least amount of mistakes coming down the back nine.

I kept reminding myself what I wrote Sat night about being patient on the back nine.  This, of course, is much easier written than actually done.  With your heart pounding and the pressure up significantly it’s very difficult to hit the precise shots and putts needed when the conditions are so difficult.  The key to my back nine was the flop in for eagle on #11 from over the green and the two putt on 16,17 and 18 from a total of 150 feet away.

I have not mentioned before the intense race for 20009/2010 NCGA Player of the Year award that I’m currently involved with George Gandranata who has won 3 majors over the past 12 months- NCGA Amateur, SF City, and the Alameda Commuters.  I think we are within 100 points of each other with the major point events still to come (Cal State Am, NCGA Stroke, NCGA Masters, NCGA Am, US Am) The NCGA has provided us with our own amateur tour with the point system (found at http://www.ncga.org click on competitions, then point list) each event is assigned points based on the field and size of the event. The NCGA Player of the Year receives a NCGA gold metal and an exemption into the next years California State Amateur (2011 at the Olympic Club).

Coming up I’m playing a private round with Rhys Davies (ranked in the top 50 in the world after last weekends 2nd in the Wales Open) I’ll hope to have an interview with Rhys as a prelude to my US Open coverage starting next week.

Thanks for staying tuned

  3. Well done Randy! Now go get Player of Year.. Best of luck!

  4. Hey Randy: In updating my own amgolf.com profile, I realized that your “other” putter is not made by “Other.” Now I’m really curious. Did you build your own face-on putter? Or is it a name brand or from a clubmaker? Thanks.
